Bill of materials (BOM) template for clothing

The bill of materials lists every material and component that goes into your garment. It is how a manufacturer prices your style, orders the right fabric and trims, and makes your sample the way you imagined it.

  • Columns factories actually use

What a garment BOM includes

A BOM sits in your tech pack next to the technical sketches and the size chart. One row per material or component, so nothing is left for the factory to guess.

  • Main fabric and any contrast fabrics or linings
  • Rib, binding, interfacing and pocket lining
  • Closures: zippers, buttons, snaps, drawcords and cord stoppers
  • Sewing thread and any contrast topstitching thread
  • Brand label, size label, care label and hangtag
  • Packaging: polybag, tissue, stickers and carton marking

Common mistakes that delay samples

  • Writing "cotton" without the weight: a 180 g/m² and a 300 g/m² cotton are different garments.
  • Leaving out the rib, interfacing or pocket lining because they don't show.
  • Giving a color name without a Pantone code, so the dye house has to guess.
  • Forgetting quantities per garment: buttons, eyelets and cord length change the price.
  • Mixing up placement: the same label can go in the neck or in the side seam.

Let the tech pack builder fill it in

In our free tech pack builder the bill of materials is filled in from your choices: fabric, rib, zipper or drawcord, labels and packaging, and the materials your construction details need (lining, interfacing, shoulder pads). You can search Pantone TCX colors by code or name and add every colorway. Our pattern team reviews each tech pack and asks about anything missing before your sample.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a BOM and a tech pack?+

The BOM is one part of a tech pack. A tech pack also has the technical sketches, the size chart with points of measure, construction details, artwork placement, labels and packaging.

Do I need supplier codes in my BOM?+

No. If you already work with a fabric or trim supplier, add their codes. Otherwise describe what you want and let your manufacturer source it.

How detailed should the BOM be for a first sample?+

Detailed enough that nothing important is guessed: fabric type and weight, colors, closures and labels. Exact supplier codes and packaging details can follow before bulk production.

Can I use this template with any manufacturer?+

Yes. The template is free to use with any manufacturer.
